“I didn’t grow up in the East Midlands – so unfortunately Loughborough Grammar School was never an option for my education. But I know I would have loved Sixth Form life here; for the following three reasons….
Our educational excellence…
The majority of our students progress to Russell Group (or equivalent) universities. And some go beyond the UK, including prestigious institutions like Harvard. Many of our students become medics, engineers and chemists (benefitting from our amazing science facilities). Others go onto careers in the finance sector or the arts – and everything in between. Above all, our careers support aims to place the right student on the right career path.
Our broad co-curricular life…
One of our core purposes is to produce young men ready for the challenges of the 21st Century. Through our wide range of co-curricular activities – from the Duke of Edinburgh scheme to responsibilities within school and opportunities to get involved with world class music, team and recreational sport, and hobby clubs, I believe that the interests forged here will remain with the boys throughout their lives. If they don’t find their niche, we feel we have failed.
As I write this from our vibrant Sixth Form centre, I can hear our students working and discussing their studies. It’s clear how much the School means to them and how much they realise the School needs them. From here, our future doctors, engineers, actors, musicians, athletes, and business leaders are born…”
Our genuine community spirit…
This is a community where everyone feels welcome – and our wellbeing surveys highlight how safe students feel. New students’ note how friendly we are and how soon they settle into School life.
—Ross Parish, Head of Sixth Form
Our Sixth Form is a place where exceptional academic achievement is made possible. That’s why our A level exam results are so consistently impressive.
We realise the importance of these forthcoming two years in your academic life. After all, the right A level results can ensure you gain entry to the university of your choice and then onwards and upwards to a successful and rewarding career.
Alongside that, we encourage all types of intellectual curiosity in our Sixth Formers. By joining us, you’ll become part of an extraordinarily dynamic intellectual community –bridging the gap between earlier school years and Higher Education.
Within our Sixth Form programme we encourage our students to develop personal responsibility for their academic development. That’s why making the correct subject choices and approaching your studies maturely is so important. In return, you can expect small class sizes, dedicated and highly qualified teaching staff, and a genuine learning partnership between teachers and students. And the option of boarding with us is available, too.
“Resources in the library are excellent and it is a nice place to go and study”
There’s so much to Sixth Form life. We’re particularly keen that you consider the many co-curricular activities on offer to help you develop the personal qualities and confidence needed to achieve future success (not to mention enriching your UCAS application).
Above all, we’re proud to say that the vast majority of our students achieve the grades they need to progress to their chosen university and course.
We believe that a Sixth Form education is about more than just academic books, revision and exams. There’s a much wider scope to our provision – including impressive facilities and exciting opportunities in sport, music and drama.
We’re particularly proud of our extensive and exceptionally maintained sports grounds at the main school campus and the playing fields complex nearby in Quorn. These include a sports hall as well as all-weather pitch, rugby pitches, football pitches, cricket pitches, tennis courts and a 22m indoor swimming pool.
Meanwhile, the Loughborough Endowed Schools Music School is also available to the Sixth Form and offers truly outstanding facilities with an inclusive music curriculum underpinned by a huge variety of instrumental ensembles, choirs and musical tours.
Our instrumental tuition features a large and talented team of specialist tutors who help everyone achieve their very best. In fact, we’re delighted to be the only school in the Midlands to have All-Steinway School status, allowing access to the finest pianos available.
“Good careers and university entrance advice – plus excellent co-curricular opportunities: music, sport, drama, CCF, charities and community service”.
Whatever you endeavour to achieve outside the classroom, our Sixth Form is the place to fulfil your unique talents.
Life in our Sixth Form is an enriching and positive experience. We hope that the memories you make here will remain with you throughout your life.
We trust you to want the best for your own future – and to make it happen. With each A Level you study, we’ll encourage you to foster a sense of personal responsibility for your own intellectual development.
This means your experience at our Sixth Form will undoubtedly be very different to school – there’s a far greater degree of freedom to enjoy as well as an open and positive environment in which to flourish, with high levels of pastoral care.
A major part of Sixth Form life is working within the wider community. We’re particularly proud of the valuable work that our boys have completed for our Voluntary Service Unit over the last fifty years – from serving in local charity shops to visiting residents in care homes and helping Rainbows Hospice. In addition, the CCF (Combined Cadet Force) features sections from all three of the UK’s armed services, and the Duke of Edinburgh Award remains hugely popular here, too.
Sixth Formers can also apply for a bursary for educational adventures named in honour of our famous ‘Old Boy’, Johnnie Johnson, the WW2 fighter-pilot ace. These highly prized bursaries have already funded numerous trips – that have ranged from India to The Falkland Islands.
“It’s a pleasant, grown-up environment which is friendly and you can be an individual without being judged.”
The Sixth Form at Loughborough Grammar School has a dedicated centre with its own elected committee. Many activities are run in conjunction with the girls from Loughborough High School, including the annual ‘Snowball’. Meanwhile, various lunches and black-tie dinners are also part of the regular agenda.
As you can see, our Sixth Form is an all-encompassing, life-enhancing experience.
Think big, aim high, always believe in your dream… We want you to aspire to be the very best you can be. And we’re right behind you.
At Loughborough Grammar School, we’re totally committed to developing bright young individuals who succeed in Higher Education – and beyond.
98% of our Sixth Formers go on to take up places at their chosen universities and every year a very substantial majority of these places are at Russell Group (or equivalent) universities including, on average, about a dozen entrants to Oxford and Cambridge, and some to Ivy League Universities. That’s why such a high proportion of our students subsequently achieve excellent degrees.
Every student has a unique career path to follow. So we offer individual advice tailored to your aspirations. Each department has a specialist teacher to advise you on careers and university courses applicable to their department. This is all part of our excellent careers advice programme.
In Year 12, we organise a Higher Education conference for you and your parents that is then followed up by visits to numerous universities (and visits to us by the universities themselves). We also offer access to a wealth of information about all available courses and your eventual UCAS applications will be closely monitored by our team of highly experienced staff.
Our support doesn’t stop – when you leave Sixth Form. The Loughburians (www.loughburians.com) is our school alumni association which has been around for over a century and continues to put together an exciting calendar of events across the country. This means that you can be in touch with former students from all generations who can offer help and advice as you progress through life.
More than anything, we’re dedicated to guiding you towards the best choices for your future career.
Entry to the Sixth Form is contingent upon pupils achieving at least 5 B grades at GCSE and at least an A grade in each of the subjects intended to be studied.
The best way to get to know Loughborough Grammar School is to see it for yourself and we enjoy welcoming families to our School at any time of the year. You can book a personal visit during which time you will be given a tour of the School by current pupils, as well as having the opportunity to meet and talk to a senior member of staff.
We also have a School Open Day on Saturday 7 October 2017 and Sixth Form Taster Days in the Autumn Term.
